LUCY CHAN AND THE MIRACLE OF HOME BIRTH!
Home birth has always been something I've been interested in. After a traumatic hospital birth with my first daughter, Marley, I decided to explore my birthing options with my second daughter, Reese. Given that my pregnancy was considered high risk due to my history of pre-eclampsia with Marley, it wasn't safe for me to have a home birth with Reese so I decided to hire a private midwife to assist me with a hospital birth, however Reese had other plans. Her labor was so fast that I had no time to reach the hospital and she was delivered at home making it the most amazing experience of my life.
When I became pregnant with my third daughter, Sadie, there was no question as to what type of birth we wanted. I was fortunate enough to be classified as a low risk pregnancy so we proceeded to plan a home water birth. I am happy to report that only a couple of Thursday's ago my dream birth became a reality. I was so relaxed despite the painful contractions and my other two girls were able to witness the birth of their new baby sister, making it a wonderful and involved experience for the whole family.
All three births were special in their own unique way, but the third home water birth was an experience that will always hold such a special place in my heart.
Home birth is not an option for everyone and I understand to a lot of women this is not an appealing process. I was under no illusions about my and my babies' safety as we did a lot of research to prepare for this and I was lucky enough to have found such amazing midwives who only preformed low risk home births.
If this is an experience you are considering, I would recommend having a back-up plan to put in play if any complications may arise. Contact and alert your local hospital of your pregnancy and ensure you complete all necessary tests and ultrasounds. A good midwife will assist you in managing your health throughout your pregnancy, so do your homework and be as informed as possible.
The gift of bringing life into this world is a beautiful and enriching experience and having the freedom to choose alternate birthing plans made it all the more rewarding for my partner and I and our beautiful three children.
